The whole series has a very cinematic look to it, from sweeping vistas of space and massive fleets to just scenes of people standing around talking, it all looks very good. It does a great job of blending the traditional 2D stuff and the CG models. Saying that I do really like the animation of the ships, and the animation in general. It’s not as flashy or action-packed as some might like, but the series instead gets its tension from the sheer overwhelming odds that our heroes are facing off against and the anticipation of the moment when they come up with a clever plan to turn it all around. A lot of the time you’re just watching masses of ships fire coloured beams at one another, or different coloured dots on a screen.

Like I said, chess in space.Īdmittedly I can imagine these types of battle putting some people off. Here the way to win is to out think and outmanoeuvre your opponent with your vast array of ships. In most shows that I watch, if a fleet of twenty thousand ships shows up they’re pretty quickly relegated to the background so that instead our main character can get the attention and turn the tide of the battle all by themselves. It’s also one of the few times were the battles have been focused on manoeuvring a fleet of ships. There is much more of a focus strategy and the politics of the opposing armies than the actual combat (not that the series is a slouch in that department). This series feels quite a bit different from most of the sci-fi and space opera I watch (or at least the stuff I have been watching). I’ve not come across this franchise before, but I understand that there has already been one series adapting this story before and after watching this it’s now on my list to check out.

With massive fleets at their command, just who will emerge victorious? There’s only one way to find out… The ReviewĬhess in space! That’s the best way I’ve got to describe this series as two Grand Masters square up to one another from across the battlefield. As the war continues to escalate though, two brilliant strategists find themselves facing one another again and again, the Empire’s Reinhard von Lohengramm and the Alliance’s Yang Wen-li. There are two major forces in space, the dictatorship of the Galactic Empire and the democracy of the Free Planets Alliance, both of which have been at war with one another for the past 150 years. Thousands of years into the future and humanity has long since spread into space, but even then there are still divisions.

Wait! You can’t end it there! What’s the Story?
